A workers’ strike at Israel’s Ben-Gurion International Airport slated for Friday has been called off after Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon intervened in the matter. Kahlon made contact with Israel Airports Authority head Pinhas Idan on Thursday and requested that he delay the strike.
“I ask that we avoid the unnecessary suffering of passengers at the end of the week, and the resultant economic damage,” he said.
The finance minister’s intervention was praised by Idan, who acceded to his request. Idan also praised the intervention of Histadrut labor federation head Avi Nissenkorn in the matter.
After a labor dispute was declared two weeks ago, the union committee announced that workers would operate a skeleton staff from the onset of Shabbat until its ending, meaning there would have been neither takeoffs nor landings.
The strike was to be held in protest of a decision by Interior Minister Arye Dery to establish a committee including mayors from municipalities near the airport that to examine the possibility to diverting IAA funds to local municipalities.
