Meretz call to investigate IDF action sparks outrage

Politicians expressed their support for the IDF on Saturday, after the international community and far Left called for an investigation of the army’s response to events on the Gaza border fence.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said: “I don’t understand the chorus of hypocrites calling for a commission of inquiry. They’re confused and think that Hamas organized the Woodstock Festival yesterday, and we need to give them flowers.”

“IDF soldiers pushed back the military arm of Hamas determinedly and professionally, exactly as we expected from them,” Liberman tweeted. “I totally back them. Thanks to them, we celebrated the night of the Seder safely.”

Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein also thanked IDF soldiers for allowing Israelis to celebrate Passover.

“The call by the UN Security Council and left-wing organizations for a commission of inquiry following the provocations on the fence on the eve of the holiday is no less than a prize for terrorism and Hamas,” Edelstein wrote on Twitter. “IDF, we love you!”

Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid said he’s “proud of IDF soldiers and commanders for their determination and professionalism. We all celebrated the Seder with our families peacefully. I suggest that Hamas don’t try us. The residents of Gaza need to protest against [Hamas leader] Ismail Haniyeh and [Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas] who are to blame for their difficult situation.”

Zionist Union chairman Avi Gabbay said he “supports and backs the commanders and soldiers of the IDF and act to defend the state’s border. The sovereign State of Israel will defend its borders from every threat. No one is allowed to cross the border unauthorized, certainly not with weapons, Molotov cocktails, tires and rocks.”

Gabbay added that the IDF “is prepared for all events on the fence and I have no doubt our soldiers did all they could to reduce the number of people harmed. Gaza is a ticking time bomb, demographically, economically and humanitarian. Hamas, who chooses terrorism again and again, is solely responsible for the difficult situation in Gaza.”

Meretz, however, called for an investigation of the IDF’s response to the events on the Gaza border, courting controversy on Saturday.

The left-wing party released a statement pointing to 16 killed “and hundreds injured, some from live fire… Testimony by unarmed demonstrators and photos in which people are shot in the back.”

Meretz chairwoman Tamar Zandberg said, “The difficult results and the filmed testimony require an independent Israeli investigation, including examining the rules of engagement and military and diplomatic preparedness for the events.”

“It is Israel’s responsibility to know what happened there, and beyond that, it is Israel’s interest to prevent a deterioration to a dangerous round of violence,” she added.

Zandberg called the current policy a “trigger-happy” one.

Several Likud MKs came out against Zandberg personally.

“I salute our brave soldiers who do not allow Hamas terrorist provocations to succeed,” Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis wrote on Facebook. “To the chairwoman of Meretz who calls to investigate yesterday’s events: Shame on you!”

MK Anat Berko of the Likud wondered what Zandberg wanted to investigate: “Do we need to investigate the IDF for defending us from Hamas attempts to eliminate us?… Do we need to investigate the IDF for stopping the enemy from slaughtering, murdering and killing innocent Jews?”

U.S., S.Korea kick off joint military exercises after month-long delay

SEOUL – South Korea and the United States kicked off their annual joint military exercises on Sunday after they were delayed by about a month for the Winter Olympics and to help create conditions for a resumption of talks between North and South Korea.

The Foal Eagle field exercise, which usually involves combined ground, air, naval and special operations troops, will continue for a month. The computer-simulated Key Resolve will be held for two weeks starting in mid-April.

A Pentagon spokesman said in March the two joint drills would involve about 23,700 US troops and 300,000 South Korean forces. Military officials in Seoul have said the scale of the exercises would not go beyond those seen in previous years.

The Foal Eagle and Key Resolve exercises are usually held every year around March but they were postponed this year until after the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and Paralympics, which started in February and ended last month.

North Korea, which has traditionally accused both South Korea and the United States of practicing invading the North during joint military drills, has remained quiet on the issue.

In March, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told a visiting South Korean delegation in Pyongyang that he “understands” the situation regarding the joint drills, according to South Korea’s National Security Office head Chung Eui-yong, who had led the delegation.

The joint exercises come roughly a month ahead of an April 27 summit between the two Koreas, their first in more than a decade.

Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in are widely expected to discuss denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and improvement of inter-Korean relations at the summit.

U.S. government seeks end to Supreme Court privacy fight with Microsoft

The US government’s Supreme Court battle with Microsoft Corp over whether technology companies can be forced to hand over data stored overseas could be nearing its end, after federal prosecutors asked that the case be dismissed.

President Donald Trump on March 22 signed a provision into law making it clear that US judges can issue warrants for such data, while giving companies an avenue to object if the request conflicts with foreign law.

“This case is now moot,” the US Department of Justice said, citing the newly passed legislation, in a 16-page court filing on Friday that requested the dismissal.

The Supreme Court on Feb. 27 heard arguments in the case, which had been one of the most closely watched of the high court’s current term. Some justices urged Congress to pass a law to resolve the matter.

Microsoft and the Justice Department had been locked in a dispute over how US prosecutors seek access to data held on overseas computer servers owned by American companies. The case involved Microsoft’s challenge to a domestic warrant issued by a US judge for emails stored on a Microsoft server in Dublin relating to a drug-trafficking investigation.

The bipartisan new law, known as the Cloud Act, was supported by Microsoft, other major technology companies and the Trump administration. But civil liberties groups opposed it, saying it lacked sufficient privacy protections.

Microsoft, which has 100 data centers in 40 countries, was the first American company to challenge a domestic search warrant seeking data held outside the United States. The Microsoft customer whose emails were sought told the company he was based in Ireland when he signed up for his account.

A representative for Microsoft did not immediately return requests for comment on the Justice Department’s filing.

Israel prepares for weeks of military and international tension

Israel is bracing for several weeks of military and diplomatic confrontation that began with Friday’s march in the Gaza Strip that left 16 Palestinians dead and hundreds more injured and is expected to continue until May 15, which the Palestinians mark as Nakba Day, the “Day of Catastrophe” marking Israel’s birth.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday night congratulated the IDF for defending the borders and making it possible for the country’s citizens to celebrate the Passover Seder quietly.

“Israel acts with firmness and determination to defend its sovereignty and the security of its citizens,” he said in a statement.

An estimated 30,000 Palestinians took part in the Hamas-organized protests, with the IDF saying that those who were shot were either attempting to cross over, plant bombs at or physically harm the fence.

Israeli sources said that except for one “problematic” incident, there are photos and videos to back up the IDF’s claims. This material, the sources said, will be shown to those in the international community who condemned Israel for Friday’s incidents, and accused it of using disproportionate force.

The Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that the fence between Israel and the Gaza Strip “separates a sovereign state from a terrorist organization.”

This fence, the statement said, “separates a state that protects its citizens from murderers who send their people into danger. The fence separates an army that uses force in self-defense and in a focused and proportionate manner, from Hamas, which has for years – including yesterday – been trying to harm millions of Israel, and which sanctifies murder and death.

“Anyone who errs in seeing in this murderous spectacle even an iota of ‘freedom of expression’ is blind to the threats Israel faces,” the statement read.

A demonstration of “freedom of expression,” however, is how EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini described Friday’s events.

“Freedom of expression and freedom of assembly are fundamental rights that must be respected,” she said in a statement.

“The EU mourns the loss of life.” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims. The use of live ammunition should, in particular, be part of an independent and transparent investigation. While Israel has the right to protect its borders, the use of force must be proportionate at all times.”

AMBASSADOR TO the United Nations Danny Danon told The Jerusalem Post that although the Palestinians were unable – because of US opposition – to get a “press statement” from the Security Council denouncing Israel on Friday, they will try in the coming days “to do something else in the UN.”

He said he did not believe this would succeed, because of US opposition.

Kuwait, according to Danon, tried to get the Security Council to meet behind closed doors and issue a statement. When it became clear that the council would be unable to agree on a statement, the Kuwaitis demanded an emergency public session of the Security Council on Friday night, knowing that – because of the Passover Seder – Israel would not be able to participate.

“While Jews around the world gathered with their family at the Seder table to celebrate the Passover holiday, the Palestinians sunk to a new, deceitful low so that they could use the UN to spread lies about Israel,” Danon said after the meeting.

“This shameful exploitation of our holiday will not succeed in stopping us from speaking the truth about the Hamas terror-gatherings that aim to destabilize the region,” the envoy added.

Because the meeting was called so quickly, the 15 member states were mostly represented by lower level delegates, Danon said.

US representative Walter Miller said “bad actors” were using the demonstrations as a cover for violence.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life today. We urge those involved to take steps to lower tensions and reduce the risk of new clashes,” he said. “Bad actors who use protests as a cover to incite violence endanger innocent lives.”

PLO Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour told the council that “these peaceful demonstrators posed no threat whatsoever to Israel or its heavily armed soldiers, yet its trigger-happy soldiers used live ammunition, tear gas and rubber bullets.”

Danon said that during that session Kuwait and Bolivia issued predictably incendiary statements, with Sweden also coming in with a “very bad statement” that said Stockholm was “appalled” by the loss of life and calling for an immediate investigation. The Swedish delegate said that it appeared that Israel’s use of live fire only aggravated the situation, and that Israel must respect the right to peaceful protest.

Following the meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called in a statement for an “independent and transparent investigation” of the incidents.

The statement also said he “appeals to those concerned to refrain from any act that could lead to further casualties and in particular any measures that could place civilians in harm’s way.

The Trump administration, meanwhile, made little mention of the violent clashes.

In a message on Twitter, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert wrote: “We are deeply saddened by loss of life in #Gaza today. We urge those involved to take steps to lower tensions. Int’l community is focused on taking steps that will improve the lives of the Palestinians and is working on a plan for peace. Violence furthers neither of those goals.”

One day before the march, US President Donald Trump’s special representative for international negotiations, Jason Greenblatt, previewed his expectations: “Hamas is encouraging a hostile march on the Israel-Gaza border,” he tweeted. “Hamas should focus on desperately needed improvements to the lives of Palestinians in Gaza instead of inciting violence against Israel that only increases hardship undermines chances for peace.”

The White House has not commented on the violence since. Greenblatt and the rest of the White House “peace team” working on a comprehensive proposal to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, led by Trump’s son-inlaw, Jared Kushner, say that solving the situation in the Gaza Strip and wrestling it from the control of Hamas is the key to a lasting peace agreement.

'Raise up many disciples': Remembering Rabbi Joseph Ber Soloveitchik

Several years ago, while reminiscing with Rav Aharon Lichtenstein Z”TL, Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik ZT”L’s son-in law, about the thrilling Brookline days of yore, he highlighted the unique Shabbat sessions with the Rav held between Mincha and Maariv at the Maimonides School Synagogue in Brookline. It was during these short interludes that a small group of lay and professional congregants would assemble around the Rav and ask questions on the weekly Torah portion or any topic of choice. Occasionally during these rare moments, the Rav would share an anecdote, a recent conversation or a meeting he had attended.

One Shabbat afternoon in the early 1980’s the Rav shared with us the following story:

It was the Rav’s annual custom to visit his wife’s grave in West Roxbury Massachusetts on Erev Yom Kippur. At the cemetery he was approached by a family who did not recognize him and assumed he was the “cemetery rabbi”. They requested he recite memorial prayers and patiently obliging he was dragged to various family graves despite the time constraints of that nightfall’s hallowed importance. Weeks later the family discovered the identity of their uber gracious “cemetery rabbi” and made a generous donation to the Maimonides School in Brookline, the Jewish Day School founded by the Rav and his wife, Tonya in 1937.

*************************************************************************************

The Rav educated, nurtured and “raised up” thousands of students. He encouraged his students to be free and independent thinkers. Ergo, his students represent a broad range; from Haredi Orthodox to left of center liberal Orthodox. An early student of the Rav stated in his introduction to a book about the Rav’s philosophy: “my loyalty and love for him as my teacher never interfered with my own intellectual independence and critical appreciation of his writings”.

As a result of the varied religious development of his students the Rav is referred to and portrayed in these publications in vastly different ways…some quote him, but expunge his name entirely.
A quarter of a century after the Rav’s passing his teachings, which during his life were mostly confined to student notebooks and limited tape recordings, have received unprecedented exposure through dozens of books and websites published by his actual and “virtual” students. These publications shed a bright light on the Rav’s brilliant oeuvre.

Commentaries are now available on the Chumash, Talmud, Siddur, Machzorim, Grace After Meals,  Haggadah and Tisha B’av Lamentations.  In the academic sphere numerous manuscripts on the Rav’s Torah and philosophy have been published and a student’s classroom notes from the 1950-51 Rav’s class on the Guide to the Perplexed has been edited and released. A Habad Hasid wrote a 375-page book entitled “The Rav and Rebbe” specifically highlighting the warm relationship and similarities between the Rav and the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

What is unprecedented is that as a result of the varied religious development of his students the Rav is referred to and portrayed in these publications in vastly different ways. Some of his Haredi writers refer  to him as the head of the “Boston Beis Din”, disregarding the Rav’s doctorate in Philosophy and decades long leadership as the Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva University. Others, while still quoting his teachings expunge his name entirely.

Yet, there are students who actively expose the Rav’s Torah to the Haredi community. A Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva University distributes free copies of the Rav’s commentaries on the Talmud to the Lakewood Yeshiva in New Jersey and the Brisk Yeshiva in Mea Shearim in Jerusalem. While the Rav once stated that were he to visit Israel he would be greeted by Haredi demonstrators, today, in fact,  the Rav’s books sell very well in most Jerusalem neighborhoods.

On the other end of the religious spectrum some of the Rav’s students criticize him for not being more liberal or “progressive” in certain areas of Halakha. An early student of the Rav wrote about the Rav opening “two doors”; pointing to new paths but not walking through them. A rabbi living in Jerusalem who never met the Rav but claims to be familiar with his writings stated that the Rav was not a “Chadshan , a Halakhic innovator, and that his students admire him excessively.

In a recently published complex psychoanalytical and philosophical book on the Rav a professor at a major university in Israel  provides rationale as to why he prefers to refer to the Rav as Soloveitchik, rather than referring to him as The Rav or Rabbi Soloveitchik. “ That I refer to the subject of this book as Soloveitchik and not “ the Rav,” or even R. Soloveitchik, serves a double purpose, to relate to him from a more critical scholarly perspective, but also to accord him the status he deserves as a figure within the intellectual history of the past century….”

In Germany, a Jesuit priest has published his Ph.D thesis on the Rav called “The Human Condition”. This, despite his thesis advisor’s lack of enthusiasm for this project, in no small matter due to the Rav’s well known objections to inter religious dialogue with Christianity.

Many of the Rav’s devotees owe their rabbinic and academic prominence to the Rav’s brilliant teachings.

Indeed, the Rav raised up many disciples.

*************************************************************************************

To the generation that did not know the Rav; “did not know Joseph” let me introduce two students from the Rav’s beloved Maimonides community in Brookline, Massachusetts, the Rav’s home.

Mr. A was born into an illustrious rabbinic family. His brother and father were rabbis and his uncle was a famed halakhic authority. At an early age he decided to pursue a business career and became very successful. He lived with his wife and young family in Hartford, Connecticut. In the early 1960’s he attended a convention in Washington D.C. where Rabbi Soloveitchik delivered a shiur. It was instantly apparent to Mr. A that Rabbi Soloveitchik was a consummate Torah giant and a singularly gifted teacher. He immediately resolved to relocate his family to Brookline. He became one of the Rav’s closest friends and companions.

Mr. A cut an elegant figure. He was tall, stylishly clothed, assertive, an avid tennis player, and well spoken. In concert with his wife they warmly welcomed young members into the Rav’s small community, embracing them. In later years Mr. A served as the Board Chairman of the Maimonides School and the leader of the Maimonides Synagogue. Above all, Mr. A was devoted to the Rav; he became the Rav’s confidant and personal assistant, regularly chauffeuring the Rav to and from the Maimonides School. He made sure the makeshift lecture hall was set up each Saturday night for the hundreds who came to listen, activated the recording equipment and occasionally hosted the Rav for kiddush in his home on Shabbat after services.

Reciprocally the Rav was privy to Mr. A’s business decisions. While the Rav was very reluctant to have his lectures recorded he allowed Mr. A to make copies of all the Saturday night Bible and Sunday morning Talmud classes. His acumen was not simply indisputable in business; he was sharp and insightful and actively participated in the Rav’s various Torah discourses.

Among the members of this small congregation of mostly academicians (some of international renown) and businessmen was an older man. This Eastern European Jew was of moderate height but seemed strong, with thick white hair, heavy reading glasses, and a determined look. During the late Mincha-Maariv Saturday afternoon interregnums, Mr. Z sat to my right on the second bench, directly in front of the Rav. I clearly remember his laborer fingers, thick and short as he grasped a large Chumash some of whose pages were folded down. He consistently prepared a list of questions related to the weekly Parsha. With his body tensely leaning forward over the bench he made sure he was first to present his queries once we were all seated. His questions were mostly simple. At times they elicited a puzzled look from the group and occasionally he would turn to fellow congregants and ask, “what is so funny?”

Mr. Z was a peddler. He sold linens and dry goods out of a station wagon. He did not have a higher education but he loved Torah and was most eager to learn. Where else would he have had the opportunity to ask one of the leading Torah luminaries his questions? The Rav was very attentive to Mr. Z and his genuine queries. Unflappable and good natured, the Rav answered his inquiries time and again, sometimes reformulating them for better coherence.

The Rav often spoke about his childhood in Chaslawitch; a predominantly Habad Hasidic community consisting of simple, poor, religiously devout and spiritual people. The Rav was convinced that most of the Jews who came to listen to his father’s (Rav Moshe Soloveitchik ZT”L) annual Teshuva and Shabbat Hagadol drashot had only a minor understanding of what his father was teaching. But they came and stood and listened intently, for hours.

In the Rav’s commentary on Pirkei Avot he states:” The strenuous efforts made to indulge in the study of the Law, the arduous work associated with Torah, the sacrifices and renunciations for its sake, are the most important aspects of Talmud Torah. The comprehension, accumulation, assimilation, creativity and remembrance are of secondary order. The study itself as an ethical engagement is important.”

“Agra de-kallah duhka” (Berakhot 6b) – the reward of Torah study is proportional to the discomfort the pupil endures.

At the Maimonides Synagogue as well the Rav “raised up” many students…

After the Rav’s passing Mr. A. would relive the shiurim, listening in his home to the Rav’s tapes he had collected and could be spotted walking the boardwalk in Florida listening to a Rav shiur.

Years later while visiting the Rav’s grave in West Roxbury, I was stunned to spot Mr. Z. at the cemetery gate. He was offering to recite the Kaddish for families visiting the graves of their relatives.

Had Mr. Z become the “cemetery rabbi” for the now bereft Maimonides Community?

Postscript: Mr. Z has passed on. His son, a rabbi with a doctorate lives in Jerusalem.

Deal reached in rebel held Douma to evacuate wounded to northern Syria

AMMAN – Negotiators in the last rebel-held bastion in Syria’s eastern Ghouta reached a deal on Saturday with the Russian side to evacuate the wounded from Douma to rebel-held northern Syria, local sources familiar with the deal said.

The agreement was reached by the negotiating committee that comprises both civic leaders and representatives of Jaish al Islam, the rebel faction in control of Douma, the sources said.

The committee has been negotiating a deal to spare the city a military assault by the Syrian army and its allies who encircle it. They have threatened to storm the city if rebels do not agree to surrender the last patch in the enclave in return for safe passage to insurgent-held territory in northwestern Syria.

Venezuela arrests five police officials over deadly jail disaster

CARACAS – Venezuela arrested five state police officials for their alleged role in a riot and fire that killed 68 people in an overcrowded police station cell, the country’s public prosecutor said on Saturday.

“The prosecutor’s office has issued arrest warrants for five officials of PoliCarabobo who have been signaled as responsible for the tragic incident that led to the death of 68 citizens in the cells of the headquarters of said regional police: THEY HAVE BEEN DETAINED #Justice,” tweeted prosecutor Tarek Saab.

Saab, a former Socialist Party governor close to leftist President Nicolas Maduro, did not provide any further details on the cause of the disaster, the worst to affect Venezuela’s notoriously violent jails in over two decades.

Relatives of dead inmates and one surviving prisoner told Reuters there was a shoot-out with police on Wednesday morning in the jail in Carabobo state capital Valencia.

One inmate’s widow said officials had doused the area with gasoline, which fueled a fire through the small cells strung with hammocks and divided with sheets.

There was no immediate comment from Carabobo state police.

World weighs in on Gaza as Israel condemns Hamas for border violence

LOS ANGELES – An impartial and transparent investigation must be conducted into the deaths and injuries of Palestinian protesters after deadly skirmishes erupted on the Gaza border Friday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

“He also appeals to those concerned to refrain from any act that could lead to further casualties and in particular any measures that could place civilians in harm’s way,” a spokesperson for Guterres added, following an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.

At least 17 Palestinians were killed and an estimated 1,400 hundred injured by Israeli security forces confronting one of the largest Palestinian demonstrations along the Israel-Gaza border in recent years, Gaza medical officials said.

Israel attempted to have the meeting postponed until after the Passover holiday, which began at sundown Friday evening, but was unsuccessful and Israeli officials refused to attend the proceedings.

“While Jews around the world gathered with their family at the Seder table to celebrate the Passover holiday, the Palestinians sunk to a new deceitful low so that they could use the UN to spread lies about Israel,” Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said soon after the deliberations ended.

“This shameful exploitation of our holiday will not succeed in stopping us from speaking the truth about the Hamas terror-gatherings that aim to destabilize the region,” the envoy added.

The UNSC emergency meeting was initiated by Kuwait, which requested the discussion be held behind closed doors, a move that essentially froze out Israeli and Palestinian representatives from participating in the deliberations.

The protests were part of the annual “Land Day” march, which commemorates the deaths of six Arab citizens of Israel killed by Israeli security forces during protests over government land confiscations in northern Israel in 1976.

Hours before the UN chief issued his statement, Danon slammed the Palestinian terror organization Hamas for stoking unrest among its civilian population and inciting against Israel.

“As we warned, the so-called peace march today turned out to be a well-organized and violent terror-gathering funded by Hamas,” Danon said in a statement released just hours before the United Nations Security Council is set to convene an emergency meeting to discuss the violence.

“The sole purpose of these provocations is to threaten Israel and sow unrest. Today we saw yet another example of Hamas exploiting civilians as they sent children to the fence with Israel intentionally endangering their lives. The international community must not be deceived by Hamas’ attempts to conceal their crimes,” Danon added.

The IDF said that thousands of protesters threw stones and set tires on fire during the demonstration, using the sheer size of the crowd as cover to carry out attacks.

The Washington Post reported that in one instance, armed Palestinian gunmen fired towards soldiers.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Defamation League condemned Hamas for the violent altercations on the Gaza-Israel border, pointing the finger at the terror organization for marshaling the anger abundant inside the coastal enclave towards Israel as a way to mask their own failure in leadership.

“Hamas is once again cynically exploiting its civilian population to draw attention away from its own flawed leadership and once again with tragically deadly consequences,” the ADL wrote in a message posted to Twitter.

“Their call for ‘return’ is a call for the end of the State of Israel,” the organization added.

Hamas said that the demonstration on Friday is just the first in a six-week campaign of daily protests along the 40-mile border to demand the “Right of Return” of Palestinian refugees back into what is now Israel. The IDF said that an estimated 30,000 people participated in the event.

The demonstrations come as ordinary Palestinians face mounting hardships inside the Gaza strip, including rising unemployment, crippling poverty and daily blackouts that last for hours, according to The Washington Post.

Human Rights Watch decried what it called the “shocking number of Palestinians killed and hurt” by IDF forces, adding that the incident brought into the fore concerns about Israel’s use of deadly force in Palestinian demonstrations.

“The shocking number of Palestinians killed and hurt today by soldiers firing across the Gaza fence raises serious questions about Israel’s longstanding use of live ammunition to police demonstrations,” HRW said in a statement.

“Israeli allegations of violence by some protesters do not change the fact that using lethal force is banned by international law except to meet imminent threat to life,” the organization added.

The military said its troops had used live fire only against people trying to sabotage the border security fence, some of them rolling burning tires and throwing rocks, and that at least two of the dead were Hamas operatives.

Witnesses said the military had deployed a drone over at least one location to drop tear gas.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement that Israel was responsible for the violence and declared Saturday a national day of mourning.

Did an IDF sniper gun down a Palestinian running from the border?

A video of an incident near the border between Israel and the Gaza Strip on Friday appears to show an Israeli soldier shooting a young Palestinian close to Jabalia in northern Gaza while he is running away from the border fence.

The footage shows the young Palestinian, simultaneously carrying a tire and running away from the border fence before falling to the ground after seemingly being shot.

A senior official in the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza identified to The Jerusalem Post the young Palestinian seen in the video as 18-year-old Abdel Fattah Abed al-Nabi and said he died shortly after being hit by gunfire.

The incident occurred at a major protest on the Gazan side of the border between Israel and the small coastal enclave in support of the return of Palestinian refugees to their former homes in Israel.

The IDF described the protest as “a violent riot,” asserting that protesters threw stones and molotov cocktails at Israeli security forces as well as opened fire on them, attempted to infiltrate Israel’s borders and set rubber tires afire. Pictures and videos appear to show that some protesters took part in violent actions.

In the past week, several IDF officials called on Palestinians not to approach the border fence, warning them that they would be putting themselves in danger.

However, the video of the young Palestinian shows that he was dozens of meters away from the border fence, which can be seen in the distance. It also does not show him undertaking any of the violent actions the IDF said protesters had been carrying out.

It is unclear what he was doing in the time that proceeds the video footage.

When asked about the video and if the young Palestinian in it posed a threat, the IDF responded with the following statement:

“The Hamas terror organization has published several videos, some of which only depict parts of incidents while others are edited or completely fabricated.

During yesterday’s violent riots and terror attacks, IDF troops faced gunshots, infiltration attempts, damage to security infrastructure, firebombs, rocks, and rolling burning tires. The IDF operated in strict accordance with the Rules of Engagement, firing only when necessary and avoiding civilians strategically placed by Hamas in harm’s way. IDF operational activity prevented the Hamas terror organization’s objective to harm security infrastructure and attempts to violate Israeli sovereignty. Don’t take Hamas’s propaganda as fact. The IDF will continue operating in order to ensure Israeli sovereignty is not breached and to protect Israeli civilians. The participants of the violent riots are situating themselves in a dangerous area, thus putting themselves in harm’s way.”

An IDF spokesman declined to comment on any follow up questions to the military’s statement including on whether the video of the young Palestinian was edited or fabricated.

On Friday, the IDF found weapons near the security fence, foiling an attack on IDF positions nearby.

According to Ashraf al-Qidra, a spokesman for the Hamas-run Health Ministry, 15 Palestinians were killed while participating in the protest on Friday.

On Saturday, the Ezzeldin Kassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, announced that five of the deceased Palestinians were Kassam members. Abed al-Nabi, the young Palestinian, was not listed as one of the dead Kassam members.

Israeli Defense Forces confirmed the report in a statement from its spokesperson, saying the drone crashed in an open field in southern Lebanon as result of a technical malfunction. The incident will be investigated, said the statement.

The al-Manar report said air traffic was lively in the southern Lebanese sky on Friday night.

Syrian army command says it has regained most of eastern Ghouta

AMMAN – The Syrian army command said on Saturday it has regained most of the towns and villages in eastern Ghouta and was pressing its military operations in the last rebel bastion of Douma.

In a televised statement, the Syrian army spokesman said the weeks-long military campaign had now brought security to the Syrian capital and also secured its main links to other parts of the country, stretching north and all the way to the Iraqi border to the east.

The army command said military operations were continuing in the outskirts of the city of Douma, controlled by the Jaish al-Islam rebel group, the last patch of eastern Ghouta still held by insurgents.

Arab-Israeli High Committee calls for protests after 18 Gazans killed

Arab-Israeli High Committee called for widespread protests within Israel after Israeli security forces used snipers to control a 30,000-person protest near the border fence on Friday.

Eighteen Palestinian protesters were killed and over a thousand injured.

Hamas confirmed that five of the dead protesters were members of its armed wing.

The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit stated that live rounds were used only in cases when protesters attempted to breach the border fence or harm Israeli soldiers.

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman confronted criticism over the decision to use live rounds by saying “a choir of hypocrites, do they think Hamas was arranging a Woodstok and we should have delivered [to the protesters] flowers?”

U.K. minister: Routine for plane to be searched after Russia demands explanation

Britain said on Saturday it was routine for border officials to search aircraft, after Russia said Moscow would demand an official explanation why a Russian Aeroflot passenger plane was searched at London’s Heathrow airport on Friday.

“It is routine for Border Force to search aircraft to protect the UK from organized crime and from those who attempt to bring harmful substances like drugs or firearms into the country,” Security Minister Ben Wallace said in a statement.

“Once these checks were carried out the plane was allowed to carry on with its onward journey.”

S.Korea deploys anti-piracy warship after hijack of fishing boat off Ghana

SEOUL – South Korea has deployed a naval vessel from its regional anti-piracy effort to help in the search after a fishing boat was hijacked by pirates off Ghana, South Korea’s foreign ministry said on Saturday.

The ministry said the fishing boat had about 40 crew – mostly from Ghana but including three South Koreans. It said the pirates used a speedboat to take away the South Koreans.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in sent South Korea’s anti-piracy Cheonghae unit to the area to try to secure the South Koreans’ release, the ministry said.

The South Korean government has been working to tackle piracy with a number of African countries, as well as the United States and the European Union.
