President Reuven Rivlin sent a letter of condolence to the family of Mireille Knoll, the 85-year-old Holocaust survivor who was murdered in Paris last week.
“In the name of the entire State of Israel, I am sending my sincere condolences for this terrible death,” Rivlin wrote, adding “The fact that the horrible incident took place only two weeks before the date on which we mark Holocaust Remembrance Day and mourn our victims, is even more heartbreaking.”
“The growing anti-Semitic attacks all over Europe, and along with them the support for parties that espouse racism, are especially worrying and we will not stop for a moment in our demand to all European leaders to intensify the battle to eradicate the phenomenon,” Rivlin wrote.
“It is so hard to absorb that the life of someone who survived the horror of the Holocaust and her home was open to anyone who is in need, ended in such a brutal manner. The entire Jewish people are with you in your mourning at this difficult time and I pray you will know no more sorrow,” Rivlin concluded.
Knoll’s murder caused outrage in France and the Jewish world.

In a surprise appearance at Knoll’s funeral last week, Rivlin’s French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, spoke at the 19th century Invalides monument where he decried the “barbaric” views that fueled an Islamic extremist’s supermarket hostage-taking in France this month as well as Knoll’s killing. Macron said Knoll’s attacker “murdered an innocent and vulnerable woman because she was Jewish, and in doing so profaned our sacred values and our history.”
