Netanyahu hails Trump's 'historic' summit with Kim in Singapore

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday applauded U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s “historic” summit in Singapore, saying in a statement that it was “an important step in the effort to strip the Korean peninsula of nuclear weaponry.”

Netanyahu also praised Trump’s policy towards Iran. “President Trump has also taken a strong stand against Iran’s efforts to arm itself with nuclear weapons and against its aggression in the Middle East,” Netanyahu said. “This is already affecting the Iranian economy. President Trump’s policy is an important development for Israel, the region and the entire world.”

According to intelligence assessments presented to Israeli leaders, Trump’s decision to pull the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal has already damaged Iran’s economy, even though renewed sanctions are only supposed to go into full effect in November. Some U.S.-based companies, includign Boeing and General Electric, have begun ending investments in the country.

Following his meeting with Kim, Trump said the U.S. “will be stopping the war games” with South Korea and “I want to get out soldiers out, I want to get our soldiers back home,” though he noted that “that’s not part of the equation right now.”
