A Hamas attack tunnel that reached into Israeli territory was blown up by the IDF on Monday, the Israeli military said of the “controlled explosion.”
The tunnel, that was still under construction, was infiltrating into Israeli territory and started in the area of the southern town of Khan Younes.
According to the military, the explosion was conducted by the Southern Command on the Israeli side of the border with Gaza.
The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said following the revelation of the tunnel and its destruction that the tunnel was a “strict violation of Israeli sovereignty, an unacceptable situation – and this the IDF had carried out an action.”
“This activity is an operational success that is based on advanced technology,” the statement by the army reads.
The IDF spokesman added that locating “terrorism tunnels” is a part of a wide defense effort carried out by the military since the end of Operation Pillar of Defense, the eight-day standoff between Israel and Hamas that took place back in 2012.
“The terrorist organization of Hamas is the address [of the violations] and it is responsible for everything that happens in the Gaza Strip, and everything that comes out if it.
“The IDF will will keep taking all measures needed over and under the ground to thwart attempts to harm the residents of the State of Israel and to keep the area quiet, as it was after Pillar of Defense operation.”
The IDF Spokesperson added that while the army had no intentions to deteriorate the situation, “it is ready to a variety of scenarios.”
Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman spoke out shortly after the report on the explosion, saying that determination paired with advanced technology have enabled Israel once more to fend off acts of aggression by Hamas. “Israel will not tolerate a breach of its sovereignty,” he said.
Liberman added that this tunnel proves that despite the Palestinian national reconciliation, “Gaza remains a kingdom of terrorism.”
“The way we see it, Hamas bares the responsibly for whats happening in Gaza,” he said.
