NEW YORK — US President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday to discuss “challenges facing the Middle East region, especially the problems posed by the Iranian regime’s destabilizing activities,” the White House said on Sunday.
The phone call followed meetings in Washington held by Israeli Defense Secretary Avigdor Liberman and the president’s national security adviser, John Bolton, as well as US Defense Secretary James Mattis, and preceded meetings between Netanyahu and the president’s new secretary of state in Israel. Those meetings focused on Iran, the officials said.
The White House did not elaborate on the call. But it comes two weeks before Trump is set to decide whether to stay in the 2015 Iran nuclear accord.
At the annual Jerusalem Post conference in New York on Sunday, Liberman said that the US administration did not ask for his advice on what the US should do on the agreement.
