Israel wins bronze in European judo final in Tel Aviv

On the third and final day of the European Judo Championships in Tel Aviv on Saturday, Peter Paltchik won the bronze in the 100-kilogram men’s division, giving the Israeli national team its fourth medal of the competition.

Paltchik did it in style: After giving impressive performances in the early stages of the championship and reaching the battle for the bronze after losing in the semifinal, Paltchik started out strongly against the Russian judoka Niiaz Bilalov. After slightly more than half a minute, he threw Bilalov to the mat and received a waza-ari, but the judges changed their scoring after stopping the match a second time to give Paltchik the ippon – and the bronze medal.

Paltchik’s bronze followed a gold for Sagi Muki in the under 81 kilogram contest and one bronze each for Gefen Primo and Tal Flicker.
