A CRPF constable who was presumed “dead” landed in the police net on Monday after three and half years, to the surprise of his family which had been drawing pension and had even claimed dues of his job in the force.
The man, however, had been living with some other woman during this period and kept on changing his location to evade identification. The police had announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on any information about the man.
According to the police, Dashrath Singh, 38, was employed as a driver in the CRPF since 1998 and was posted at Gaya in Bihar when he took a month’s leave in February 2012 to visit his native place in Jhunjhunu district. After completion of the leave, Singh left home but neither reached home nor reported to duty.
On April 1, 2012, his brother Pawan Singh lodged a missing report at the Sadar police station in Jhunjhunu, said IG (Jaipur rural range) DC Jain. His father Ram Kumar Singh also lodged a police case suspecting the role of some persons in his son’s mysterious absence.
The police searched for Dashrath till October 2014, after which the high court directed IG Jain to supervise the case himself and search for the man.
Jain said he formed a team of officers in October 2014 who traced Dashrath’s mobile locations and came to know that he lived in Jodhpur, Pratapgarh, Chittorgarh and Neemuch in MP where he worked as driver for some contractor. From there, Dashrath eloped with the contractor’s wife and started working in a factory in Himachal Pradesh from where the police team recovered Dashrath and the woman on Monday.
A team member, Rakesh Kachhawal, ASP Neemkathana, said that Dashrath claimed that he owned about Rs 2.5 lakh in debt, which is why he decided to go missing. “His claim is doubtful as he could have returned the amount easily from his job and his family is also well to do,” said Kachhawal, adding that job stress could be another reason for absence.
The officer said he was produced before the high court, which directed police to question him. Kachhawal said that during his missing period, his family pleaded with CRPF authorities to give the nod for payment of pension and other dues.
His wife Chandrakala has received Rs 17 lakh as dues and has been drawing Rs 12,000 as pension per month since his absence in 2013, the office added. Police will also investigate whether Dashrath was in touch with his family.
