Inter Aliyah gets knocked out in closing minutes

After last Tuesday’s impressive 3-2 win over Hapoel Tzafririm Holon, expectations were high for Inter Aliyah as they hosted Bnei Yehud in Jaffa in the second round of the Israeli National Cup. However, the visitors advanced 1-0 on a late-game goal.

Yehud, which finished fifth last year, controlled the game early on and the home side struggled to create any chances of note in the sweltering heat. Some last-ditch tackles from center-backs Sam Sank and Alan Kaler kept the score goalless. During the half time break, Inter Aliyah manager Jerome Katz reorganized his side with fresh tactics.

It was a completely different story for much of the second half, with Inter’s players taking the game to their opponents, who were looking more weary with each passing minute. The goal would not come, though, despite efforts from the likes of Daniel Geron, Ariel Peretz and substitute Benjamin Polnauer.

With extra time (and potentially penalties) seemingly inevitable, Yehud broke the home side fans’ hearts with an 85th minute goal, before seeing off the game to progress through to the third round of the cup.
