The British singer Morrissey’s new album, which is due out in November, features two songs with references to Israel. One is called “The Girl from Tel-Aviv Who Wouldn’t Kneel” and the other is simply called “Israel.” The forthcoming album, “Low in High School,” is his first in three years, and follows the singer’s visit to Israel last year. The list of the songs was released on Tuesday, but there are no details about the lyrics as of yet.
Morrissey, the former singer of The Smiths, has made a number of appearances in Israel in recent years. At a 2012 concert in the country, he draped himself with an Israeli flag, a scene that was shared widely on social media. Last August, during his most recent concert in the country, he told the audience how proud he was to be here, adding that Tel Aviv is the only place in the world that had presented him with a key to the city, an honor that even London hasn’t conferred on him.
The PR firm promoting the new album, which will be launched in Los Angeles on November 10 before its release in Britain, said it features political statements. In “Spent the Night in Bed,” a single from the album which was released on Tuesday, Morrissey calls on his friends calls to stay in bed and not watch the news, as doing so makes you feel “small and alone.”
The album cover is another example of Morrissey’s ongoing opposition to the British monarchy. It features a boy holding an ax along with a sign with the slogan “Axe the Monarchy.” Morrissey has attracted considerable attention in Britain over “England is Mine,” a feature film released last month based on an autobiographical account of his life as a young musician.
