Sonic rapper creates a new song in honor of Sonic Mania’s positive reception

Sonic Mania is pretty great, and the enthusiasm around  it feels real, natural, and not at all like the “Oh, that’s nice” retro revivals we sometimes see. While this isn’t my full review, let’s just say that there is a lot of genius behind this game, somewhere in the vein of Mega Man 9, and the gaming community is flocking around it like it’s release is a cultural event.

This is what happens when fans get what they want after so many years.

One fan who is especially thrilled is rap artist Hunnid Pacent, the man behind the Pumpkin Hill theme in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Sonic Mania’s positive receptive inspired him so much that he dropped a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog track all these years later. The song is dedicated to Knuckles, the anti-hero of the series and an obviously a favorite of Hunnid Pacent.

Knuckles was the playable character in the original Pumpkin Hill stage.

Oh, this is wonderful.

And if you’ve never heard it, here is the Pumpkin Hill theme. The level is notorious for its grinding difficulty, so imagine listening to this theme for about a half hour on end. Needless to say, this theme is… polarizing… thanks to the overexposure.

Check out Sonic Mania on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The PC version will be released on Aug. 29.
